Coop Sol comes out of the "closet"!

— filed under:

After years of small-but-steady steps forward (and the useful power of positive thinking), Coop Coffees’ sister coop in Montreal la Cooperative de Solidarite du Cafe Equitable “CoopSol” has moved beyond our former “closet-sized” office and into our current office “compound” – or, as we like to call it, “Labo Equitable” (The Fair Trade Lab Experiment)!

Coop Sol comes out of the "closet"!

Lunch with our new office-mates

Our new space is located in Montreal’s retired Cadbury factory - in a converted vintage industrial loft... and windows that span an entire wall (offering a magnificent view of downtown Montreal and Mont-Royal)! The spacious rooms and 12-foot ceilings now offer us the space to accommodate the in-house quality control lab – a project we have been discussing for years and which is suddenly very close to becoming reality.

We share this wonderful space with Fibrethik, a Fair Trade organic cotton importer, and Direct Terroir, a Fair Trade wine importer (creating an “in-house network of Fair Traders and hence the ambiance of a “Laboratoire du Commerce Equitable”). We still have a couple of work-space cubicles available for rent... so if you know of Fair Traders interested in establishing a formal presence in Montreal, please don’t hesitate to be in touch and pass along their contact information!

This space will help us grow into our capacity - and not only create a better working environment for our staff, but also opens up new opportunities for the coop’s growth and stability. In addition to our daily grind of producer and roaster communications, outreach and projects... we will also be able to develop greater links to the Fair Trade movement in the local community as we host – together with FibrEtik – a series of Fair Trade workshops, seminars and product launches over the course of the year. This is just one way we expect to be able to improve our engagement and strengthen the discussions around the future of Fair Trade.

We have all kinds of exciting new possibilities in store! And after a fresh paint job, a plethora of tasteful garage-sale purchases, and a deep-clean... our new space is looking good! This is a far cry from doing business in Monika’s living room just a couple years ago... (thankfully).

The entire Coop Sol team is thrilled with our recent growth spurt and quite eager to see where it can lead us!
