World Fair Trade Day

Coop Coffees is a proud sponsor of World Fair Trade Day (WFTD), an international celebration of Fair Trade. This year’s events will be taking place in over 80 countries worldwide and in North America, Fair Traders plan on breaking the record number of participants (50,000!) in the Fair Trade Coffee Break! The theme of this year’s World Fair Trade Day is Everything is better when it’s fair.

The lives of producers and consumers are better because of Fair Trade. When we support Fair Trade, we not only support the people who make the items we consume and enjoy, we also support the environment, women’s rights, children’s rights, cultural dignity and peace building. That’s a powerful thing to do by choosing to buy Fair Trade products.

Fair Trade Resource Network, an information hub designed to grow the Fair Trade movement, is promoting the WFTD within the US by encouraging organizations, companies, schools, religious affiliations and any other groups to host World Fair Trade Day events on or around May 9th.  Events might include Fair Trade food tastings, talks, music concerts, fashion shows and much more - all in an effort to promote Fair Trade and campaign for trade justice together with farmers and artisans around the world.

Part of the many events in this year's WFTD will be the World’s Largest Fair Trade Coffee Break. Fair Trade Resource Network's goal is to surpass last year’s record and take back the from record Fairtrade Finland, who organized 50,000 people in October, 2008. They hope to involve more churches, synagogues, businesses, schools, villages, towns, and cities in Fair Trade than ever before. At any Fair Trade Break, as at least one of the main drinks or food items served has to be Fair Trade, and information on Fair Trade will be available. To be eligible for free Fair Trade items (i.e. promo material like posters, postcards, etc), organizations and companies must register their event at www.ftrn.org.

SAVE THE DATE! The Fair Trade Resource Network (FTRN) will be holding a series of WFTD09 Conference and Media outreach calls to kick-start the organizing efforts.  Contact FTRN at WFTDay@gmail.com to sign up for conference calls.
