Winter 2013

In this issue...

Heading into the home stretch of the Mexican and Central American harvests, the big - and disturbing - news of the season seems to be Roya (leaf rust) epideminc sweeping across the region and the potentially devastating impact this could have on overall production. Cooperative Coffees roasters and staff have been actively on the ground, getting a first hand accounting of what this and other challenges in Fair Trade and the market might mean for the lives and livelihoods of  hundreds of thousands of family farmers. Here you can read more about people "Connected by Coffee" with Higher Grounds and Just Coffee's whirlwind tour through Chiapas, Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua, documenting farmer stories in their Fair Trade Chronicles...

Fall 2012

In this issue...

With Autumn squarely upon us, we face a time of both celebration and turmoil. For CoopCoffees, this is the season for our Annual General Meeting (AGM) of members - hosted this year by roaster / member AmaVida Coffee in Santa Rosa Beach, FL. It's also a busy and exciting time for farmers - as South American shipments hit peak season and Central American harvest preparation is in full swing - with all that entails! Some spotlights in this newsleter include - our producer partners in northern Peru Sol & Cafe and CENFROCAFE have been rewarded for their quality, and Progreso Network has partnered with CC roasters and Guatemalan farmers from APECAFORM to pilot an innovative approach to "consumer direct" pre-financing....

With summer fast upon us ---  we are all ready to move into a slow-down season after this whirlwind Spring of coffee, communications and Fair Trade! In the aftermath of the TF USA split from FLO-International -- there has been a flurry of Fair Trade activity during the annual SCAA conference in Portland and the well-attended Fair Trade in rEvolution breakfast forum, a Fair Trade Leaders' Summit in Minneapolis bringing together traders, producers and NGOs from domestic and international organizations, and the regional WFTO annual assembly here in Montreal. All this has offered a broad spectrum of voices and opinions to reflect upon the next wave of Fair Trade direct and producer driven equitable trade initiatives! We still need to give all this novelty some time for the dust to settle....

The holidays are just around the corner – a New Year isn’t far off! And we fully expect that 2012 can be even more exciting, productive, and busy than 2011. The Coop Coffees offices have been busy, bringing in new staff, moving staff around, and saying goodbye to old staff and friends. The Fair Trade world has been rocking too, with more voices chiming in every day on the ever changing landscape. We'd like to take this opportunity to thank all of our members, partners, allies, and readers for your support throughout 2011! We look forward to reconnecting with you all in 2012!

As Autumn leaves begin to fall, we are reminded of some harsh realities around the world. This has been a month of shocking and sometimes tragic news -  with sad news coming in from producer partners and roaster members alike.  On a more optimistic note, the Cooperative Coffees AGM held in Whitehorse, YK was a truly extraordinary event with positive direction coming from it...

Its summer.... and from the reports back it seems to be a hot one on all fronts! Iced coffees and pool days are our recommended coping mechanisms. Of course, there is also the option of travel and change of scenery (of which we have been doing plenty lately!) Check out our trip reports from roaster/staff visits in Bolivia, Colombia and Nicaragua. We also have roaster delegations setting off to Ecuador and Peru to visit CEPICAFE and other producer coops this August as part of our Farmer to Farmer program.

It's been a busy and rewarding couple months for Cooperative Coffees: IMO certified us under their relatively new and well-reputed Social Responsibility and Fairtrade program, "Fair for Life"; we successfully imported EJ Dawson (across the US-Canadian border!) to work with us in developing and expanding our Montreal cupping lab services; and a number of our members were able to spend time with our partners in producer countries.

Spring is in the air!!  For those of us up in the "Far North" that means, time to put away the snow boots and heavy jackets and pull out the bicycle and sunglasses.  Spring is also a time of new beginnings and growth.  And while for Coop Coffees and the Fair Trade movement growth happens in every season...this spring is particularly bright! Coop Sol welcomes its new Board of Directors, staff and roaster members embark upon a year full of exciting travel and project work, and plans advance for a promising Fair Trade Futures Conference.  Also new this spring, CoopCoffees lands the first container from our newest producer partner in Sumatra (APKO)!

Despite the fact that it's only February, 2010 has already proven to be quite a busy year!  Riding on the coattails of the holiday craze, Coop Sol's annual general meeting took place in Peru with nearly 40 participants -- roasters and producer reps alike -- taking part in a week of discussions and activities. 2010 already has a couple of key events lined up on the calendar from Valentine's Day (great way to support the movement by choosing delicious fair trade chocolate for your loved one), World Fair Trade Day, and the Fair Trade Futures Conference (early-bird registration now open!). But before you jump to your calendar, be sure to check out some of the news happening with our members and partners.
