Despite the fact that it's only February... 2010 is already proving to be another busy year!  Riding on the coattails of the holiday craze, Coop Sol's began the year with feet running - with a January AGM in Peru! The Annual General Meeting took place in Lima with some 40 roaster and producer representatives -- participating in a week of intense discussions and activity. After day-long meetings, a couple LONG bus rides to the North and Central regions, and several packed and productive days of field visits with partner coop projects in CEPICAFE, CENFROCAFE and Pangoa, we finished the week "tired but happy"... and above all inspired by the eye-opening exchange between people in their earnest and heartfelt quest to improve Fair Trade's impact on the small-scale farmer.

Speaking of Fair Trade, 2010 already has several key events lined up -- from Valentine's Day (a great way to support the movement by choosing delicious fair trade chocolate for your loved one!), World Fair Trade Day May 1 - 15, and the Fair Trade Futures Conference (early-bird registration now open!) Sept 10 12 in Boston. Stay tuned for more details... you won't want to miss out on these events!

But before jumping to your calendar, be sure to check out some of the current news and happenings with our members and partners.  Higher Grounds just got back from a trip to Ethiopia...and is pulling together a marathon across Ethiopia in 2011 to raise money and awareness for education.  Bongo Java, along with Nashville's Belmont University, is getting involved with the community of producer partner La Asociacion Chajulense in a micro-finance program that will help farmers invest in a honey-making project.  And, Just Coffee has planned a April-May delegation to eastern Africa (Ethiopia, Uganda, and Tanzania) that is open to the public!

Thanks and enjoy your read!

Success in Peru! Coop Sol AGM report

on the bus

From January 15th to the 21st, several of Coop Coffees' roasters and producer partners convened in Peru for meetings and field visits during Coop Sol's 2010 annual assembly.  Despite our grueling schedule (so much to do in one short week!), unexpected road blocks and run-ins with the police, everyone who participated came away with a better understanding of what Fair Trade truly is and should continue to be on the ground, with our partners, and within our coop.

Time to strap on those running shoes!!  In an effort to raise interest, awareness, and funds for education in Ethiopia, Higher Grounds has organized the “Run Across Ethiopia,” to take place between January 8th – January 22nd, 2011. The run will be a 300 mile multi-stage expedition from the capital city of Addis Ababa to the coffee growing community of Afursa Waro.  The objective of the run is to highlight the need for better education in Ethiopia, while raising an anticipated $100,000 to build schools and supply materials for education projects through OCFCU and the Tesfa Foundation.

Bongo Java teams up with Belmont U and La Asociacion Chajulense in honey project

the B team

"The B Team"
Bongo Java,  Belmont University and the Asociacion Chajulense Bee-keepers have teamed up to support the Chajulense honey project. With each investing $2,000 - they created $20 micro loans to bee-keepers to initiate or expand their honey business. A couple Bongo-oids, a group of students and a couple faculty recently  returned from Chajul "buzzing" with enthusiasm. This project is now part of an "idea competition" sponsored by Dell computer. And although late to the gate, they are now battling for the top spot!  Vote for them here!

Jams and panela production going strong at CEPICAFE

hand-washed fruit

January's trip to Peru gave us the opportunity to check in with CEPICAFE and get an update on their projects, namely their jam and panela (raw brown sugar) production.  We toured the production plants for each and discussed their exciting new plans for expansion.  Hoping to expand and diversify their current product offering to include dried fruit and tropical fruit juices, they will be moving into a new, larger facility within the next  year!
