Bill Harris recounts some of the stories of families he visited during a tour of small-scale coffee farmers in Ocamonte, Colombia. Diversification, organic practices, and sustainable livelihoods are just some of the direct impacts Fair Trade has had on the lives of these families.

In a whirlwind trip to Central America, CoopCoffees Producer Relations Manager Monika Firl returned to meet with ACOES - our newest producer partner in Tacuba, El Salvador; attended the CLAC "Coffee Network" meeting in Managua, Nicaragua; and was able to visit with our producer partners CECOCAFEN and CECOSEMAC. Cafe Cambio in Guatemala

Guatemala-Chiapas Trip
-
Taking advantage of their trip to Guatemala for the CLAC’s annual assembly, Monika Firl of CoopCoffees and Katie Colligan of member-roaster Desert Sun spent the following week catching up with some of our producer partners in the region. They packed their agenda, with plans to meet up with five different groups in five different geographical areas. Everything went more or less as planned in spite of the unfortunate flat tires and unexpected “Todos Santos” detour to catch a glimpse of a wild Day of the Dead celebration! In the end, the trip was a good combination of business and fun – just the way we like to do it at Cooperative Coffees!

CoopCoffees in Ethiopia - Birthplace of Coffee
-
From Addis Ababa to Dire Dawa Peace Coffee Director Lee Wallace, Conscious Coffees Roaster/Owner Mark Glenn and CoopCoffees Producer Relations Manager Monika Firl bounced along 2,500 km of rough and rutted roads through Sidamo, Yirgacheffee and Harar regions. It was a perfect opportunity to get a feel for the country and to get real time information with the harvest just underway (or not).
