Just Coffee 2007 Travel

Hello all, Here in Madison, Just Coffee has been working with a student organization at the University of Wisconsin to develop a service-learning project that we have called the Fair Trade University Project to actively engage students in issues related to fair trade. We are launching the first hands-on experience of the project this May, hoping to bring a group of students to Guatemala to learn about fair trade. We will be visiting Santa Anita, another coffee coop in the community of Montellano (2 hrs from Chimaltenango), as well as meeting with Cafe Conciencia and Manos Campesinos. Please distribute this announcement to anyone that you think might be interested. We are giving preference to college students, but will consider other participants if there is space. Below is the announcement. Attached is more info: tentative itinerary and application. (deadline for application has been extended). Thanks!

The Fair Trade University Project (FTU) is an exciting new  service-learning project designed to engage college students in a  hands-on experience of the fair trade movement and all of the economic, social, cultural, and environmental justice issues that fair trade encompasses. As a Fair Trade University, we will take learning  into the field, to share experiences directly with indigenous coffee farmers, fair trade coffee roasters, and social and environmental activists from the global north and global south. We will
apply the principles of fair trade to our learning - democratic decision making, working with small producers and cooperatives, and  building long-term relationships around social justice values, as we
discuss and debate how to keep the fair trade movement moving forward.

Join us as we initiate this exciting new service-learning project!

  • *Visit and work with two rural, coffee-growing cooperatives in
Guatemala: One with a history in the fair trade movement and another
in the process of looking for alternative markets. Learn about
    democracy and alternative production models
  • *Discuss Fair Trade. Should it be market-based or movement-based?
  • *Learn about the  history of Guatemala's internal conflict, the
histories of the communities, and how they have rebuilt their lives
    after war.
  • *Study CAFTA and its effects on Guatemala
  • *Learn about women's organizing to resist CAFTA
  • *Learn about organic production of coffee, what it means, & its
importance to these communities struggling to do sustainable development
  • *Work in the coffee fields, as the trees are flowering, and hike the land.

Cost: $600 (possibly lower depending on number of students)

Deadline to apply is has been extended to April 26th with a $100 deposit to ensure consideration
