At Alternative Grounds, we began by roasting only fairly traded coffees
in 1995. That was more than 13 years ago when there was little attention
paid to fairtrade and why it was important. It wasn't until 1998 that
Fair TradeMark Canada, an independent fairtrade licensing and regulatory
body, came into being. We were proud to be one of the first licensees,
and proud of our contribution to a growing awareness of fairtrade and
freshly roasted coffee in Canada. None of this would have happened, if
it weren't important to our community of cafe patrons and wholesale
customers! What began as an initiative to bring community together over a
great cup of coffee has evolved into a sustainable and sound small
business which includes a separate roasting facility (organic certified)
and a cozy cafe on Roncie, one of Toronto's eclectic hoods!!
